Topping DX3 Pro+ DAC & Headphone Amp
With the DX3 Pro+, Topping presents a powerful DAC with headphone amplifier. The Topping DX3 Pro+ is a further development or an update of the proven DX3 Pro. The main product features include the ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip and Bluetooth 5.0 with LDAC and aptX HD support. With the DX3 Pro+, Topping offers a number of improvements, including higher performance, lower input impedance and significantly lower THD+N and THD+N (HPA).
The main highlights of the unit include:
-Four different output modes: the Topping DX3 Pro+ can serve as a headphone amplifier, line-out, DAC and preamplifier.
-QCC5125 chipset, which supports protocols and codecs such as SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC
-8-core XMOS XU208 (2nd generation)
-USB input supports up to PCM32bit768kHz and DSD512 natively
-Optimised NFCA circuitry, with ultra-low distortion and noise
-Two gain settings, +6dB Lo Gain | +19dB Hi Gain
- Output power at 32 Ohm load: 1800mW x2 | at 300 Ohm load: 250mW x2
Equipment and accessories of the Topping DX3 Pro+
The DAC comes from the factory with all the components required for operation. The Topping DX3 Pro+ comes in an inconspicuous white outer box and is well secured in it alongside some accessories. Besides the unit itself, it contains a DC 15 volt and 1 amp adapter, a remote control, a Bluetooth antenna and a USB cable. An instruction manual and the warranty card complete the scope of delivery.
Construction, connections and design
The Topping DX3 Pro+ is optionally available in a black or silver-coloured metal housing. The rectangular chassis is of comparatively small dimensions and high-quality workmanship. Due to the compact dimensions, the unit is easily portable. Overall, the DAC measures 16.5 cm in length, 12 cm in width and 4 cm in height. The front panel of the device has a large OLED display, a headphone input with 3.5 mm as well as a multifunction button and volume control. The display provides users with accurate information about the current operating modes.
The rear of the unit offers RCA outputs, dual coaxial inputs, optical inputs, USB input, a connection for the Bluetooth antenna and a connection for the power supply.
The large display of the DX3 Pro+ is designed for best readability. It shows the currently selected input mode in blue, while other information appears in orange. The information shown on the display includes the currently selected input, the output mode (for example, headphone amp, headphone amp with DAC, DAC and preamp), the current volume and the sampling rate.
The control on the front of the unit regulates the volume. In addition, users can switch between the different input modes by briefly pressing the button. A longer press of the button switches the unit on and off again. All other functions of the DX3 Pro+ are only possible or accessible via the supplied remote control. The remote control allows users to control the volume of the unit, set it to silent, switch between input modes and change the output modes. Users can also use the remote control of the DX3 Pro+ to select the digital filter mode, adjust the gain and change the display brightness. Operation via remote control is designed to be intuitive and allows for optimal use after only a short training period.
Interior equipment and technical features
At the heart of the DX3 Pro+ is the ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip. An XU208 supports sampling frequencies of up to 768kHz PCM as well as DSD 512 Native via USB.
For Bluetooth 5.0 functionality, the DX3 Pro+ uses a Qualcomm QCC5152 chip with LDAC support, aptX LL support as well as aptX HD support. Unlike many other Bluetooth DACs, the built-in DAC on the QCC5152 is bypassed, while the signal is processed and decoded by the ES9038Q2M in its place.
The DX3 Pro+ uses two different gain modes (Plus 6 dB and Plus 19 dB). These can be selected and used depending on the application. In this way, the unit is suitable as a headphone amplifier for a range of different types of headphones, from sensitive in-ear monitors to full-blown over-ear speakers.
With the PA3, the DX3 Pro+ has an excellent power amplifier with RCA and TRS balanced inputs. The balanced TRS input can be used to drive other audio sources.
The different output modes of the Topping DX3 Pro+ allow it to be used as a headphone amplifier, preamplifier, DAC or headphone amplifier plus DAC. This allows a wide range of applications beyond IEMs and headphones. The Topping DX3 Pro+ can also be used as a preamplifier for active loudspeakers. The device works self-explanatory via Plug-and-Play. The connection is done via USB directly into the end device without the need for additional drivers. Only the high-end ASIO applications require an additional driver under Windows 10 so that they can be fully used. If you want to use this functionality, you need the Thesycon ASIO driver for Windows. All other functions are already available ex works and can be controlled via the remote control.
Bluetooth transmission performance of the Topping DX3 Pro+
For Bluetooth 5.0 LDAC transmission, the DX3Pro+ has Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification. The QCC5125 chipset supports multiple protocols including LDAC, AAC, SBC, APTX, as well as APTX LL and APTX HD. This ensures comprehensive compatibility. The outstanding sound quality of Bluetooth transmission is ensured by decoding the digital signal directly from the ES9038Q2M, bypassing the QCC5125 chip. Pairing with Bluetooth-enabled devices is largely automatic, so smartphones, tablets or notebooks can quickly recognise the device.
Compatibility and applications of the Topping DX3 Pro+
The Topping DX3 Pro+ is designed for a wide range of applications. Due to the low output impedance and the ability to set high or low gain, the headphone amplifier function is suitable for a wide range of headphones and IEMs. The NFCA circuitry of the Topping DX3 Pro+ is designed for low noise, low distortion and low distortion. This makes the unit suitable for both high-impedance headphones that rely on high performance and sensitive in-ear monitors.
